Introduction To Successful Detox Diets Plans And Foods

By James Spann

The purpose of Detox diets is to get rid of the buildup of contaminants and toxins from the body. The ultimate aim is to improve physical health and mental capacity by enhancing the functioning of bodily systems. It is possible only when the diet works as planned, which is never easy and may not always be possible.

The detoxification process is really very simple, with the primary aim being to deny the body many or all of the harmful foods and drinks it is addicted to. An overweight person habituated to eating junk food throughout the day may be required to give it up entirely and eat nothing but salads. On the other hand, someone who's very weak may be put on a diet that takes away processed foods and replaces it with full meals packed with unprocessed protein-rich foods and whole grains.

Another common case involves patients addicted to beverages such as carbonated drinks or beer. The diet is planned in such a way that it denies the patients these drinks and speeds up the detoxification process with the help of healthy all-natural fruit juices and smoothies containing green vegetables. If the patient is suffering from obesity, an extreme diet may limit liquid intake to nothing but water and/or coconut water.

Such a diet plan cannot be created using a set formula. Dietitians must decide what to do on a case-by-case basis. There's no established science behind it as yet, so results are not guaranteed and there are no guidelines that need to be followed. It's just a matter of finding a competent dietitian and then exercising some willpower.

For instance, one plan that is often used is a three day juice fast. The patient is not allowed to eat anything, and the only nutrition intake comes from fruit juices. Similarly, a seven day diet is comprised largely of unprocessed foods including fruits, green vegetables, whole grains, olive oil and nuts. Some patients who do not have a weight problem may also get to eat fish.

There are certain things to be done that are common to detox diets of all types and durations. Fried foods and dairy items are usually excluded. Sugar and foods containing a lot of sugar are also likely to be taken off the menu. Processed foods that include additives and preservatives must also be abstained from.

The reverse is also true, with some foods considered as essential ingredients for effective detoxification. These are items that contain inordinately high amounts of essential fatty acids, antioxidants and other such things that actually speed up the detox process. Garlic in powdered or paste form is one such item, since it goes well with other foods in the diet. The sulfur compounds released into the body through garlic intake helps the get rid of toxins much faster.

Most detox diets also contain lemons which give the body some much needed Vitamin C, which in turn prevents toxins from building up. Apples provide glucaric acid that helps clear up the liver by getting rid of dangerous toxins, carcinogens and steroids. All foods that nature provides similarly have their own specific benefits, so a professional dietitian should be able to pick out the ones that will be most helpful to each patient.
